Digital amateur television

From the spectrum and complex numbers to DVB-S, DVB-T and video encoding, in four chapters. Every slide comes with its speaker notes: read at your own pace, or present.

  1. From complex numbers to Fourier analysis and software-defined radio

    Chapter 1 · 19 slides

From complex numbers to Fourier analysis and software-defined radio

The two tools under all signal processing: the spectrum of a signal, and the complex number that describes amplitude and phase

  2. Digital communications, explained by DVB-S

    Chapter 2 · 37 slides

    Digital communications, explained by DVB-S

Every step from bits to a satellite signal and back, shown with DVB-S: scrambling, error correction, QPSK, pulse shaping, the link budget, and what DVB-S2 changed

  3. OFDM, explained by DVB-T

    Chapter 3 · 35 slides

    OFDM, explained by DVB-T

How OFDM works, shown with terrestrial TV: why one fast carrier fails over land, thousands of slow carriers, the IFFT, the guard interval, pilots, how a receiver locks on, single-frequency networks and what DVB-T2 changed

  4. Video encoding, explained for DATV

    Chapter 4 · 33 slides

    Video encoding, explained for DATV

H.264 and H.265, their settings and GStreamer pipelines, the transport stream, how to check a received stream, and how to send a still picture over the weakest link

Presenting a chapter

  1. Connect the projector as a second screen (extended, not mirrored).
  2. Open the chapter and click Presenter view. A second window opens with the slides only.
  3. Drag that window to the projector and press F in it for full screen.
  4. Present from the first window: this slide, the next one, the notes and a timer. Arrow keys, space and a clicker change the slide on both screens; B blacks out the projector, T pauses the timer.

On one screen, Present shows the slides full screen; N shows the notes below them.
